RAMALLAH, December 13, 2017 (WAFA) – The ongoing demonstrations that evolved into clashes across the occupied Palestinian territories over the US move recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital continued to hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies for the seventh day in a row.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported in their Wednesday issue that scores of Palestinians were injured when Israeli forces suppressed demonstrations that continued to rock the occupied Palestinian territories for the sixth consecutive day.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that two Palestinians were killed and a total of 153 others injured in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported Saraya al-Quds, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, explaining the two men were on a “jihadist mission” when they were killed in Beit Lahiya.
According to al-Ayyam, a Palestinian young man was shot and seriously injured by Israeli forces allegedly for possessing a knife near Ariel settlement bloc in the northern West Bank. The army later said the man did not have a knife and shot was apparently by mistake.
The dailies spotlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan before the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) emergency summit on Jerusalem in Istanbul.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida explained that Abbas and Erdogan discussed ways to save Jerusalem.
Al-Ayyam published a news item by Reuters titled Turkey chides Arabs for ‘weak’ reaction ahead of Jerusalem summit.
Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah was reported in al-Quds announcing the cabinet has commenced the disbursement of $6.7 million in support of educational institutions in Jerusalem.
Covering Fatah Revolutionary Council’s (FRC) meeting in Ramallah, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that FRC has called on Washington to rescind US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Al-Quds said Trump’s administration has bet on weak reactions to its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
The dailies covered the meeting between Jordan’s monarch Abdullah II and Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz over Jerusalem in Riyadh.
The dailies said in this regard Abdullah and bin Abdulaziz stressed the need to intensify concerted efforts to safeguard the historical rights of the Palestinian people in Jerusalem.
Al-Quds highlighted the findings of an opinion poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research on the US move on Jerusalem.
It said more than 90 percent of respondents view the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital as a threat to Palestinian interests and the largest percentage demanded a strong response that includes a return to an armed intifada.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that hundreds of Israelis rallied in front of the Israeli embassy in Tel Aviv in protest of the US move on Jerusalem.
Al-Ayyam added hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists rallied in Berlin, chanting “Free Palestine.”
It also reported former Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Fouad Twal condemning the US move on Jerusalem and describing Jerusalem as a “red line that cannot be crossed.”
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Tuesday reiterated its condemnation of the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transfer of its embassy, describing it as bias against Palestinians.
The Saudi cabinet reiterated in a meeting headed by Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, King of Saudi Arabia, that the decision represents a great bias against the historic Palestinian right in Jerusalem, guaranteed by international resolutions.
