Israeli court keeps family of alleged Jerusalem attacker in jail

JERUSALEM, March 13, 2017 (WAFA) – The Israeli Magistrate Court in Jerusalem Monday remanded until Wednesday four members of the family of alleged Jerusalem attacker, Ibrahim Matar, from Jabal al-Mukkabir in East Jerusalem, according to the family lawyer Muhammad Mahmoud.

Police arrested the four - Matar’s parents, his brother and uncle – early Monday from their home shortly after Matar allegedly attacked and stabbed a couple of Israeli police officers at Lions Gate, one of the gates to the Old City of Jerusalem, before he was shot dead. The two officers were lightly wounded.

Police raided Matar’s home after the incident, thoroughly searched it and detained his parents, brother and uncle.

Police, who kept constant presence in the neighborhood, took down a mourning tent the family had set up for their son and said they will not allow any activity in the neighborhood commemorating Matar.

A total of 286 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and inside Israel since October 2015 by Israeli gunfire, most after alleged stabbing or car ramming attacks that left 40 Israelis dead.
