Newspapers review: Israeli plan to expropriate large swaths of land north of Tulkarem

RAMALLAH, March 13, 2017 (WAFA) – The Israeli plan to expropriate large swaths of Palestinian land north of Tulkarem in the northern West Bank hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli occupation forces delivered military orders to expropriate large swaths of Palestinian land belonging to the Sha‘rawiya area, north of Tulkarem.

The dailies also covered President Mahmoud Abbas’ statements during a ceremony marking the conclusion of training of civil servants on the civil service code of conduct in Ramallah.

He was reported in al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida stating: “Ongoing Israeli aggressive policies portend dire consequences.”

He was also reported in al-Ayyam expressing his willingness to continue to cooperate with US President Donald Trump in order to achieve a just and comprehensive peace.

He was also reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida pledging to “fight any projects or concepts designed to abort the Palestinian national project,” and not to allow the Gaza Strip to be separated from the state of Palestine.

Furthermore, al-Quds published an Israeli investigative report revealing that Israeli government institutions are involved in the expropriation of Palestinian lands.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Palestinian police violently suppressed a demonstration over a court case against slain activist Basel al-Araj and five others who were imprisoned by the Palestinian Authority last year in Ramallah.

Al-Quds explained “regrettable events” occurred between police and protestors, while al-Hayat al-Jadida reported prosecution denying that a case was filed against al-Araj.

Moreover, al-Ayyam reported the United Nations (UN) warning that three Palestinian Bedouin communities in the West Bank Area C are threatened with forcible displacement.

Finally, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli settlers in the West Bank city of Hebron paid tribute to a soldier who killed a wounded Palestinian, dressing up as him and stating that he should have been treated as a hero.
