Newspapers review: Killing of prominent Palestinian activist in al-Bireh focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, March 7, 2017 (WAFA) – The killing of a prominent Palestinian activist during an Israeli military raid into the central West Bank city of al-Bireh hit the front page headlines in Palestinian local dailies.

Al-Quds said a Palestinian was killed during an exchange of fire with Israeli forces in al-Bireh city. Al-Ayyam said Israeli forces killed a young man from Bethlehem district during the raid.

The dailies identified the slain Palestinian as Basel al-Araj, 31, from the village of al-Walaja. Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the body of al-Araj was withheld by Israeli forces.

Moreover, al-Quds reported on sources close to US President Donald Trump’s administration as stating that one of Trump’s advisors is slated to visit the region soon in order to advance peace efforts. It added the US administration warned Israel against taking any unilateral steps.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported on a US official stating that Trump expects Israel to act “reasonably” regarding the Palestinian question.

Al-Quds published a feature story saying that Israeli forces installed barbed wires around schools in the Bethlehem district town of Tuqu, hindering Palestinian students’ access to schools. 

It said Palestinian students of al-Nukhba school in the East Jerusalem town of Sur Bahir gathered in the courtyard of the Israeli Municipality of ]West[ Jerusalem to attend classes ]in protest of Israeli authorities decision to shut down the school[.

Highlighting demolitions of Palestinian homes, al-Ayyam reported Israeli occupation forces demolished a Palestinian home, south of Hebron.

It added authorities threatened to demolish the entire Palestinian Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar,  east of Jerusalem.

It reported Presidential Advisor for Foreign Affairs and International Relations Nabil Shaath stating the upcoming Arab League summit is requested to take a “decisive and serious” stance on the relocation of the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and the Palestinian cause.

Finally, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the Fatah movement slamming the so-called Fatah Conference, scheduled to be held in Paris. It reported Fatah affirming that it has nothing to do with any such conferences.
