Newspaper review: Palestinian killed by Israeli soldiers laid to rest

RAMALLAH, February 19, 2017 (WAFA) – The funeral of a Palestinian youth who was killed by Israeli soldiers, and the continuous home demolitions in Jerusalem, were highlighted on the front pages of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Sunday.

Al-Quds, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on the funeral of Mohammad al-Jallad, a 24-year-old Palestinian who was shot dead by Israeli soldiers after he allegedly attempted to carry a stabbing attack at Huwwara checkpoint in November 2016.

His family received his body a week after he was declared dead in February 2017, and was laid to rest in his hometown, Tulkarem, in the occupied West Bank, on Saturday.

The continuous home demolitions in occupied East Jerusalem were reported in the three dailies.  Al-Quds said two houses were demolished in Jabal al-Mukkaber and the village of Hizma, under the pretext of having no construction permit.

It also said that a Palestinian-owned land in Jabal al-Zaytoon was confiscated by Israeli authorities in order to build an Israeli park in Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that a Palestinian family was forced to demolish its own house in neighborhood of Silwan in Jerusalem after Israeli municipality declared it was built without a permit.

Covering the daily Israeli attacks on Palestinians, Al-Ayyam and al-Quds reported that Israeli forces raided several areas in the West Bank and detained five Palestinians in the city of Hebron. Meanwhile, Israeli navy opened fire at Palestinian farmers and fishermen in Gaza.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the funeral of Mahmoud Ayyaseh, 44, First Lieutenant from Jenin who was killed in a hit-and-run accident when a resident from the town of Qabatiya hit him with an unregistered car he was riding when the police officer asked for his papers.

It said that police in Jenin intensified measures to confiscate unregistered vehicles.

Al-Ayyam reported on Khalil al-Tafkaji, Director of the cartography department in the Arab Studies Association saying that Israel has approved more settlements in January 2017 alone than it did in 2016.

Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General, said in a statement that opposing the appointment of Salam Fayyad as a UN envoy to Libya is a huge mistake, as reported in al-Ayyam.

Mohammad Moumani, the Jordanian government spokesperson, also said in a statement that the Palestinian cause is a priority issue for Jordan, according to al-Hayat al-Jadida.

A statement by Naftali Bennett, the Israeli Minister of Education, was published in al-Ayyam. Bennett, who is also the leader of the right-wing religious The Jewish Home party, said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised a new settlement for those who were evicted from “Amona” outpost and he has to fulfill his promise.

Yacoub Shahin and Amir Dandan, Palestinian contestants on the popular singing show “Arab Idol,” have made it into next week season’s finale.
