RAMALLAH, February 16, 2017 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies gave extensive front page coverage in their Thursday issue to the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington and their statements as well as local, Arab and international reaction to them.
The dailies highlighted Trump’s statements on the two-state or one-state solution, which drew wide reaction from Palestinian and world officials.
The dailies reported the Palestinian leadership expressing its readiness to positively deal with the Trump administration for peacemaking.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported President Mahmoud Abbas reiterating his determination to proceed with institution building.
Highlighting Fatah Central Committee’s meeting in Ramallah, the dailies said Fatah movement elected Mahmoud Aloul, former Nablus governor, as deputy to the chairman, Mahmoud Abbas, with former security chief Jibril Rjoub elected as secretary.
Al-Hayat reported the committee slamming Israeli occupation practices against the Palestinian people as illegal.
Al-Quds reported chief of Hamas political bureau Khaled Mashaal as warning against a new Israeli war on the besieged Gaza Strip.
Covering home demolitions, the dailies said Israeli bulldozers demolished three Palestinian homes in Hizma, a village east of Jerusalem.
Al-Ayyam explained a number of Palestinians were shot and injured during clashes with Israeli troops, who raided Hizma to demolish the homes.
Al-Quds added Israeli police delivered 23 orders to demolish Palestinian homes and structures across East Jerusalem.
Al-Ayyam said Abbas met World Bank President Jim Yong Kim in Ramallah. It described Abbas’ meeting with CIA director Mike Pompeo in Ramallah as “frank, serious and in-depth”.
It said Israel mulls passing a new bill that would effectively allow it to annex 12 settlements and a number of settlement blocs around Jerusalem.
It reported Palestinian Authority governor of Jerusalem, Adnan Husseini, stating that Israel is waging an extensive battle to change the status quo in Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as stating that reaching a just and permanent solution to the Palestinian cause would help restore regional stability.
