RAMALLAH, September 17, 2015 (WAFA) – Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah, urged the US to promptly intervene and pressure Israel to stop its aggression on Jerusalem, particularly settlers’ continued raids into al-Aqsa mosque compound, and the Israeli police’ attack against worshipers.

During a meeting held in Ramallah on Thursday with US Consul General in Jerusalem, Donald Blome, Hamdallah affirmed the need for the US to take serious and effective measures to compel the Israeli government to stop its unilateral measure of dividing al-Aqsa mosque compound spatially and temporally between Muslims and Jews.

Hamdallah warned that the Israeli escalations against Jerusalem and al-Aqsa mosque could drag the entire region into a religious war and a cycle of violence.

He further stressed that Israel’s insistence to resume with its settlement construction policy in violation of international norms and conventions would only undermine the two-state solution.

On Tuesday, Israeli police attempted to storm al-Qibili Mosque in the compound and damaged its historical doors in order to detain Palestinian worshippers barricading themselves inside.

The clashes followed two days of similar incidents at the Mosque compound, with many Palestinians injured and detained by police and as Jewish settler groups called on Jews to en masse force their way into the Mosque.

Israel has been enforcing a unilateral temporal division on the mosque during the past  few weeks, a measure that was widely condemned and rejected, particularly by Jordan, which is responsible for Jerusalem's holy sites in line with a 1994 peace treaty with Israel.

 The Israeli ongoing attacks on the mosque were also denounced by the US, UN, and EU.
