Newspaper Review: Netanyahu’s Harsher Measures against al-Aqsa Mosque Stone-Throwers Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, September 17, 2015 (WAFA) – Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted on Thursday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to consider harsher measures against Palestinian “stone-throwers” who protest against Israel’s growing dominance over al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam highlighted in its main news subject: “Netanyahu declares “war” against protesting Palestinians who throw stones and firebombs, as well as against protesters barricading themselves inside al-Aqsa Mosque.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said besides these harsher measures, Netanyahu asked Israeli Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein to allow Israel Police to deploy snipers firing small-caliber bullets against rock throwers.

Al-Quds said dozens of Palestinians in Jerusalem were injured by live ammunition and rubber-coated bullets fired by Israeli police during confrontations across Jerusalem on Wednesday.

It said Jewish extremists renewed their provocative raids to al-Aqsa Mosque on Wednesday. It added that Israeli police assaulted two Islamic Waqf guards at the mosque on Wednesday.

Al-Ayyam said the recent escalation of violence at al-Aqsa Mosque, prompted by Jewish settlers’ raids to the site, gained wide international and Arab concern.

It said Jordan, the custodian of holy places in Jerusalem,  asked the international community to stop the continued  Israeli assaults against al-Aqsa.

On a different subject, the three dailies said former Palestinian hunger striker Mohammad Allan resumed his hunger strike after he was re-detained and placed once again under administrative detention without charge or trial, upon his discharge from the Israeli Barzilai medical center in Asqalan.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli prison guards recently assaulted Palestinian detainees’ cells in Nafha prison and attacked them with teargas.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said Palestinian security forces arrested some 15 gunmen suspected of being involved in live-fire shooting incidents in Jenin refugee camp.
