Newspaper Review: Dailies Highlight Israeli Massacres in Gaza

RAMALLAH, July 13, 2014 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted in their Sunday issue the recent Israeli bombardment and massacres in the Gaza Strip, in addition to the UN Security Council’s call for an immediate ceasefire and for the protection of civilians.

 

Al-Quds:

 

- A horrific [Israeli] massacre [in Gaza] leaves 18 people killed and 42 injured after shelling a house as worshipers were leaving a mosque.

- UN Security Council calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and for protecting the civilians.

- Confrontations [broke out] following Taraweeh Prayer in Jerusalem, while ‘Yitzhar’ settlers set fire to olive trees.

- A Palestinian source: intensified international communications [are underway] to reach a truce in Gaza.

- Hamas and Islamic Jihad: [we] will not return to 2012 [ceasefire] understandings, amid warning to use ‘new elements’ that would surprise the Israelis.

- The Political Commission [of the Palestine Liberation Organization] continues its meetings and takes a set of decisions.

- UNRWA: we are preparing to expand our operations … we are ready to house 50 thousand Gazans.

 

Al-Hayat al-Jadida:

 

- UN Security Council calls for a ceasefire, while Israeli escalates.

- President [Abbas] receives phone calls from [William] Hague and Geagea and phones [Moncef] al-Marzouki.

- Arab foreign ministers are holding an emergency meeting on the situation in Gaza tomorrow.

- The Political Commission [of the Palestine Liberation Organization] continues its meetings and takes a set of decisions.

- Al-Sisi discusses the situation of Gaza with [Yony] Blair and warns of the dangers of escalation.

- Rafah border crossing is opened for three days to allow entry of pilgrims and of passengers left stranded at the Egyptian side [of the border].

 

Al-Ayyam:

 

- Rockets target Tel Aviv once again … Israel calls for evacuating northern Gaza.

- Massacre in Shuja'iyya neighborhood: 19 people killed, including women, children, and elderly.

- Israel TV: [Palestinian] factions have done what Arab armies did not do.

- Two rockets land in Modi'in settlement.

- [Israel’s Minister of Internal Security] Dichter: as long as the war lasts, we discover its absurdity.

- [Israel’s Defense Minister] Ya’alon: we are preparing for long days of fighting.

- Two mentally ill females are the latest victims of the [Israeli] aggression.

- Gazans: this is terrorism, [referring to Israeli bombardment].

- Leadership will go to address the United Nations to examine the possibility of international protection for the Palestinians.

- Al-Sisi warns of the dangers of military escalation in Gaza.

- Four rockets land in Hebron and Bethlehem districts.

- Israeli intelligence divides Gaza according to the ‘map of pain.’

- UN Security Council calls for a ceasefire and for protecting the civilians.

- The UK, France and German discuss a ceasefire in Gaza today.

- Two rockets were shot from southern Lebanon at northern Israel.
