Egypt condemns extremist Ben-Gvir's storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque, deeming it a dangerous escalation

CAIRO, April 7, 2026 (WAFA) – Egypt has strongly condemned the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by extremist Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. Egypt described the move as a dangerous escalation, an unacceptable provocation, a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law, and an undermining of the historical and legal status quo in East Jerusalem.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed its complete rejection of such practices that violate the sanctity of Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem. The Ministry stressed that the entire Al-Aqsa Mosque compound is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims, and that any attempts to impose a new reality are null and void and unacceptable.

Egypt also affirmed that Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, Egypt expressed its deep concern regarding the continued restrictions on worshippers entering Al-Aqsa Mosque and the curtailment of freedom of worship, which constitutes a grave violation of international law, fuels tensions, and threatens to ignite further conflict in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Egypt emphasized the necessity of respecting the historical and legal role of the Islamic Waqf in Jerusalem, particularly the Hashemite custodianship, in managing the affairs of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and regulating access to it in a manner that preserves its sanctity and maintains the status quo.
