Guterres expresses fear southern Lebanon could turn into barren land due to Israeli attacks

BEIRUT, March 14, 2026 (WAFA) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday expressed concern that southern Lebanon could turn into a barren land as a result of the Israeli aggression.

At a press conference in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, concluding his visit to Lebanon, António Guterres warned that the country is witnessing widespread destruction. He cautioned that southern Lebanon could be reduced to a barren landscape, while Beirut’s southern suburb faces the risk of continued bombardment and even the possibility of total devastation.

Guterres arrived in Beirut on Friday, where he launched an urgent humanitarian appeal worth more than $308 million to support the Lebanese people.

António Guterres said that the only solution is diplomacy and dialogue, calling for an end to the bombardment and hostilities.
