Spain officially ends mandate of its ambassador in Israel

MADRID, March 11, 2026 (WAFA) – The Spanish government has officially ended the mandate of its ambassador in Israel after recalling her to Madrid in September 2025 against the backdrop of the war on the Gaza Strip, according to a royal decree published Wednesday in the official state gazette.

Should Spain choose to return with a new ambassador, a diplomat would first need to be appointed to the post and present their credentials to the Israeli authorities.

King of Spain Felipe VI announced in a decree signed on Tuesday that, based on the proposal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he has decided to end the mandate of Ms. Ana Maria Salomon Perez as Spain’s ambassador to the State of Israel, expressing gratitude for her services.

Madrid recalled its ambassador in September 2025 following intense diplomatic disputes with Israel, after the Spanish government announced new measures aimed at halting the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Israel has not appointed an ambassador to Spain since the Spanish government, under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, recognized the State of Palestine in 2024.
