Spanish Foreign Minister urges firmer European stance on Gaza crisis and West Bank settlement expansion

MADRID, February 23, 2026 (WAFA) – Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares called for a firmer European stance in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and continued settlement expansion in the West Bank.

Speaking on X on Monday, Álvarez emphasized that deliberate killings continue in Gaza, while humanitarian aid remains stuck at the crossings. He noted that the European Union's silence regarding Israeli violations in the West Bank and attempts to displace Palestinians is incomprehensible.

Albares added that the European Union possesses the necessary tools to exert pressure on the Israeli government and called for their effective use to address the deteriorating humanitarian situation and ongoing settlement expansion.

In a related context, he stressed that U.S tariffs constitute an attack on European sovereignty, calling for a response that safeguards the European Union’s interests.
