Tulkarm governor briefs UN official on humanitarian situation amid ongoing Israeli kaggression

TULKARM, December 29, 2025 (WAFA) – Tulkarm Governor Abdullah Kmeil briefed Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Palestine), Ramiz Alakbarov, on the overall situation in the governorate amid the ongoing Israeli aggression and its severe humanitarian repercussions, most notably the forced displacement of residents of the Tulkarm and Nur Shams refugee camps, colonists’ attacks, and other challenges confronting the area.

The briefing took place during a meeting held at the Governorate headquarters, with the participation of representatives of relevant partner institutions and sectors.

Kmeil conveyed the greetings of President Mahmoud Abbas and expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the United Nations. He underscored the gravity of the humanitarian situation resulting from the ongoing aggression, highlighting in particular the forced displacement of residents of the Tulkarm and Nur Shams refugee camps and the mounting pressures facing the local population.

He reviewed the latest developments on the ground, the scale of damage to infrastructure, and the demolition of citizens’ homes, in addition to the urgent humanitarian needs of the displaced. Kmeil stressed the importance of the United Nations’ role in exerting pressure to stop the aggression, ensuring international protection for the Palestinian people, and bolstering relief efforts to support those affected.

Kmeil also highlighted the interventions undertaken to support the displaced, implemented through the Dignity Committee for Relief and Shelter in coordination with international and local institutions, as well as the private sector.

He said the economic situation in Tulkarm Governorate is extremely difficult, particularly due to the forced halt of workers’ access to areas inside the 1948 territories, in addition to closures and restrictions on access for people from those areas to the governorate, which has had a significant impact on the overall economic situation.

For his part, Alakbarov outlined the efforts of the United Nations to support displaced families, those affected, and students in UNRWA schools, noting the provision of relief supplies and other related assistance. He also addressed the current economic situation in the occupied Palestinian Territory.

He affirmed that the Palestinian National Authority represents a model of successful leadership in crisis management, noting that the United Nations submits a monthly report to the UN Security Council on the situation in the occupied Palestinian Territory, particularly in the governorates of Tulkarm and Jenin.

During the meeting, representatives of partner institutions and sectors in Tulkarm Governorate also delivered interventions, reviewing the general conditions in the governorate and underscoring the importance of international intervention, calls to stop the aggression, the provision of support and assistance to citizens, and the pursuit of solutions to the various issues affecting the population as a whole.
