President Abbas: Palestinian independence is key to regional security and stability

ROME, December 12, 2025 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas of the State of Palestine said on Friday that achieving Palestinian independence along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, is the only way to ensure lasting security and stability in the region.

President Abbas delivered his remarks at the annual conference of Italy's Brothers of Italy party in Rome, emphasizing that a fully sovereign Palestinian state would not be a security burden on anyone but would instead serve as a source of regional stability and a responsible partner in maintaining security and building peace.

He stressed that the Palestinian people aspire to live in their homeland with freedom and dignity, in a modern state that upholds democracy, peaceful transfer of power, pluralism, equality, and the rejection of violence. President Abbas noted that countries recognizing Palestine do so as a positive investment in the future of peace and stability.

The President also announced that parliamentary and presidential elections will be held within a year after the end of the war, underlining that the absence of an independent Palestinian state is not only a historical injustice to the Palestinian people but also a root cause of instability in the region.

He congratulated Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her party leadership on their annual conference, highlighting the vitality of Italy’s political life, and reaffirmed the deep friendship and cooperation between Palestine and Italy, based on mutual respect.

He thanked Italy for its continued support of Palestinian state-building efforts, training of Palestinian police, humanitarian aid, treatment of injured children, and participation in the European monitoring force at the Rafah crossing.

President Abbas called for the full implementation of a two-state solution in line with international law, stressing that a sovereign Palestinian state alongside Israel in mutual security and peace is the path to lasting regional stability.

He highlighted that the ongoing occupation and policies of fait accompli are not sustainable and that a Palestinian state will serve as a responsible partner in upholding security and peace.

He also underscored the importance of expanding Palestinian-Italian cooperation in trade, investment, education, and tourism to serve mutual interests and strengthen stability across the Mediterranean region.
