Senegal’s League of imams and preachers condemns visit by Senegalese delegation to Israel

DAKAR, December 8, 2025 (WAFA) – The League of Imams and Preachers in Senegal affirmed its categorical rejection and strong condemnation of the participation of what it described as “a delegation of Senegalese clerics and journalists” in a visit to Israel, stressing that the delegation does not represent the Senegalese people or the country’s religious leadership in any way.

In a statement issued on Monday, the League said Senegal’s religious leadership has historically been known for its steadfast positions in supporting the Palestinian people and defending their legitimate rights.

It emphasized that no credible religious institution in Senegal had endorsed the initiative or provided it with any legitimacy or mandate, and that it runs wholly counter to the Senegalese people’s long-standing position rejecting the policies of occupation, colonization, and repression.

The League added that the visit comes at a time when the world is witnessing grave violations of international law and human rights in Palestine, considering such a step a political wrongdoing and an injustice that does not align with Senegal’s official positions and its history of supporting causes of truth and justice.

It also recalled that Senegal has chaired, since 1975, the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, reflecting the Senegalese state’s firm and lasting commitment to the Palestinian cause.

The League emphasized the importance of not associating Senegal, its scholars, or its people with what it termed an isolated individual initiative lacking legitimacy, reaffirming its enduring diplomatic, moral, and religious commitment to supporting Palestine.
