BRUSSELS, February 7, 2025 (WAFA) – European Union (EU) Commission Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, Anouar El Anouni, stated that imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) would undermine global efforts towards accountability.
In a statement issued on Friday, El-Anouni emphasized the significant role of the ICC in supporting international criminal justice and combating impunity.
He said the European Union expresses its regret regarding the U.S. executive order sanctioning the ICC.
El-Anouni reiterated the EU’s firm support for the ICC and the principles enshrined in the Rome Statute.
He stressed that the U.S. executive order poses a serious challenge to the work of the ICC and threatens to impact ongoing investigations and proceedings.
He also pointed out that the U.S. decision could undermine years of efforts to ensure accountability worldwide.
The spokesperson noted that the EU will monitor the impact of the executive order and is considering potential additional actions.
