British Parliamentary Committee calls on government to set timetable for recognizing state of Palestine

LONDON, January, 18, 2024 (WAFA) – A British parliamentary committee called on the British government to set a timetable for recognizing an independent Palestinian state, and to do everything in its power to ensure Israel's commitment to international law.

The British Parliament's International Development Committee published a report on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, developments in the West Bank, and the conditions of displaced Palestinians.

The report pointed to "a large number of civilian casualties and the destruction of civilian infrastructure in Gaza as a result of Israeli attacks," stressing that international court decisions indicate the risk of violating international law in Gaza.

It added, "We believe that there is a reasonable risk that Israeli military operations in Gaza will involve violations of international humanitarian law that could lead to accusations of genocide."

The report called on the British government to announce a timetable for recognizing an independent Palestinian state, stressing that recognizing it is important for achieving lasting and sustainable peace.
