JERUSALEM, November 18, 2024 (WAFA) - The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany announced a financial support of €6 million towards supporting the UN2720 Mechanism for Gaza, designed to expedite the delivery of humanitarian aid.
This commitment aligns with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2720 (2023), which calls for the creation of an operational framework under the Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza (SHRC) to support immediate humanitarian needs in Gaza.
The allocated funds will support the following key initiatives:
● Essential logistics support: Procurement of trucks to enable the delivery of humanitarian aid by UN organizations inside Gaza as well as aid delivery from Jordan by the Jordan Hashemite Charitable Organization (JHCO).
● Operational efficiency: Essential operating costs to facilitate operations along the Jordan corridor, including fuel provisions.
● Optimizing aid flow infrastructure: Establishment of truck holding areas at Allenby Bridge and Al Ghabawi in order to expedite the provision of supplies.
“We are grateful for Germany's substantial and generous contribution, which will enhance the operational capacity and effectiveness of the UN2720 Mechanism at a critical time,” said Ms. Karuna Herrmann, UNOPS Director in Jerusalem.
According to Ulrike Borrmann, Deputy Head of the German Representative Office to the Palestinian Territories, “the humanitarian needs in Gaza are unprecedented. Hence, our current focus is to enable and expedite the safe distribution of essential goods to the Palestinian people in Northern Gaza and beyond. Germany, therefore, is pleased to partner with UNOPS in addressing the humanitarian crises in Gaza."
This financial contribution arrives at a critical juncture as the humanitarian situation in Gaza worsens, with the urgent needs of the population intensifying. The collaboration between Germany and the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) underscores a collective international effort to strengthen humanitarian response mechanisms. A focal point of this partnership is the enhancement of the Jordanian corridor, which plays a pivotal role in the delivery of essential aid to Gaza amidst ongoing challenges.
