Newspapers Review: Jewish Mob Attack against Arab Dominates Daily

RAMALLAH, August 18, 2012 (WAFA) – An attack by a Jewish mob against an Arab in Jerusalem’s city center was the main story of the Saturday issue of Al-Ayyam newspaper.

It said that some 50 Jews attacked three Arab youths as they were walking on Jaffa Road in West Jerusalem and according to the story an 18-year-old Arab resident of the city, identified as Jamal Joulani, was critically injured when he received a blow to the chest that reached the heart.

A police spokeswoman said the incident was being investigated, adding that the reason for the attack was not known. None of the Jews involved was arrested.

The two other dailies, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted this story on their front page, but it was not the main story.

The main headline in al-Hayat al-Jadida focused on an interview President Mahmoud Abbas gave to the local radio station, Mawtinee. The headline quoted Abbas saying “settler attacks are done under the protection of the occupation forces.” Abbas also said in the subhead that “Jerusalem and al Aqsa are ours and no one can take them from us no matter what.”

Al-Quds highlighted a story that appeared in the Friday issue of the Hebrew weekly Yerushalim, which said that the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem plans to build a solid waste station near a school north of the Arab neighborhood of Beit Hanina. It warned that this would seriously affect the health of the students and teachers, not to mention that the law bans building such stations near schools.

At the same time, said the paper, the same municipality allocated millions of dollars to build sports facilities in the settlement of Pisgat Zeev, which was built on Beit Hanina land. Also, plans are underway to expand two settlements south of the West Bank city of Hebron in spite of a court order to evacuate them. This story was also on the front page of the other dailies.

All three dailies had a picture on their front page from al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem where some 200,000 Muslims attended the last Friday of Ramadan prayer.

The three papers also said that the end of Ramadan Eid al-Fitr will start on Sunday. The holiday will continue through Tuesday.
