Newspapers Review: Abbas’ Speech at Conference Dominates Dailies

RAMALLAH, June 18, 2012 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas’ speech during the third International Islamic Conference on Jerusalem was the focus of Monday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

The prime headline in al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Abbas saying the peace process is in “a state of clinical death,” and holding Israel fully responsible for that. In addition, Abbas called on Arabs and Muslims to help preserve Arab property in East Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam highlighted the death of two Palestinians, 34 and 27, who were shot by an Israeli settler in an area west of the village of al-Sammou, south of Hebron. The daily printed a photo of relatives of one of the dead Palestinians mourning him before his burial, while al-Hayat al-Jadida printed a photo of the dead Palestinians.

News on the Egyptian presidential run-off elections appeared on all three newspapers, in addition to reports about a decision by the Egyptian Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to dissolve of the Egyptian Parliament.

Israeli reports stressing that the two missiles that landed in southern Israel last week were fired from the Egyptian Sinai desert was an attempt to influence the course of the Egyptian presidential elections, reported al-Ayyam daily on its front page.

Al-Quds editorial slammed the continuous Israeli settlers’ violent attacks, the latest was the killing of two Palestinians near Hebron, and wondered what the Palestinian Authority will do to protect the Palestinians.

The daily urged the Arabs and international community to stand by the innocent Palestinians. It said Israeli government support for settlers will lead to more violence and disturbance in the region.
