RAMALLAH, June 6, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Wednesday highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ speech at the World Economic Forum on the Middle East, North Africa, and Eurasia held in Istanbul, in addition to the Palestinian events commemorating the 45th anniversary of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, known also as Naksa (or setback) Day.
The prime headline in al-Hayat al-Jadida newspaper quoted Abbas calling on Israel not to turn its back on this peace opportunity, which may not remain available for long.
The daily printed a picture of Abbas addressing the forum.
Al-Ayyam newspaper dedicated its front page to feature dozens of injuries among Palestinians in clashes that erupted with Israeli soldiers during the protests commemorating Naksa Day across the West Bank.
The daily said Israeli soldiers used excessive force to disperse the demonstrators, using tear gas and rubber-coated metal bullets, as well as arrested a protester in East Jerusalem. Photos of the protests in Jerusalem and Hebron dominated the front page.
Al-Quds featured the Israeli Attorney General’s decision to build 300 housing units in Beit El settlement near Ramallah and relocate five houses in the Ulpana outpost near Beit El, ordered by the Israeli Supreme Court to be evicted, to a nearby location.
The dailies reported on the late Tuesday night release of prisoner Thaer Halahleh, 32, who went on a hunger strike for 77 days protesting his administrative detention.
Al-Ayyam said on its front page that a proposed election law, approved by the Palestinian factions, adopted proportional representation for the Palestinian National Council (PNC) elections and to increase the number of its members to 350.
