Arab League Committee Urges Financial Aid to Palestinians

DOHA, June 2, 2012 (WAFA) – The Arab League’s Peace Initiative Committee meeting in the Qatari capital Doha and in the presence of President Mahmoud Abbas Saturday called on the Arab countries to uphold their financial obligation towards the Palestinian Authority (PA).

PLO Executive Committee member Saeb Erekat told reporters after the meeting that Abbas asked the Arabs to provide a safety net of $100 million a month to the PA in case Israel decided to withhold Palestinian tax revenues as a punishment.

Abbas told the committee of the steps the Palestinian Authority plans to take at United Nations Security Council and the General Assembly to win full state membership in the international body and of its intention to demand that the terms of the Geneva Convention be implemented in the occupied territories to protect Palestinian civilians.

The committee stressed that resumption of Palestinian-Israeli negotiations requires a total halt to Israeli settlements in the Palestinian Territory, including in East Jerusalem, accepting the principle of the two-state solution within 1967 borders and to end the Israeli blockade on Gaza.

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil al-Arabi proposed to ask for a special meeting for the UN General Assembly to discuss the issue of the Palestinian prisoners.
