Newspapers Review: Release of Remains Dominates Dailies

RAMALLAH, May 31, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Thursday highlighted Israel’s release of the remains of 91 Palestinians who were killed in military operations and buried in numbered graves in Israeli cemeteries.

The papers quoted Minister of Prisoners’ Affairs Issa Qaraqi saying that upon arrival of the remains to the presidential headquarters in Ramallah special funeral ceremonies will be held in the presence of President Mahmoud Abbas and other senior officials.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak saying that the Israeli government will initiate “unilateral action” if peace talks with the Palestinian Authority reached a dead end dominated the three dailies.

He warned in a speech at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) in Tel Aviv that if a permanent peace agreement with the PA turns out to be impossible, Israel will consider a temporary arrangement or unilateral actions.

Fatah Central Committee member Azzam al-Ahmad speaking to al-Ayyam affirmed that talks to form a new Palestinian government headed by Abbas have begun between Fatah and Hamas.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on Jewish settlers attacking Palestinians in Yatta, south of Hebron, and vandalizing land that belongs to Palestinians, while Israeli soldiers arrested three Israeli activists in the village of Taqou near Bethlehem for protesting Israeli settlement activities.
