Newspapers Review: Dailies Focus on Striking Prisoners

RAMALLAH, May 6, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Sunday continued to highlight news on the hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails on their 20th day.

Al-Quds reported on its front page that the Arab League General Secretariat is expected to hold an emergency session on Sunday, upon President Mahmoud Abbas’ request, to discuss Arab and international moves regarding the issue of the prisoners.

The daily also featured threats by prisoners in Al-Naqab (Negev) prison to raise the numbers of the striking prisoners within the following 48 hours.

Al-Ayyam highlighted in red a statement released by the striking prisoners, in which they denied claims that they reached an agreement with the Israeli Prison Service on a part of their demands, and stressed that they will not end their hunger strike if Israel did not fulfill their demands, mainly to end the solitary confinement and allow family visitations to Gaza prisoners.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam printed photos of hundreds of Palestinians demonstrate in Ramallah in solidarity with the striking prisoners on Saturday.

Al-Quds printed a picture of a Bahraini delegation visiting al-Haram al-Sharif compound in the Old City of Jerusalem and featured their visit to the occupied East Jerusalem for the first time.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Palestinian protesters managed to raise the Palestinian flag on several Israeli institutions in the occupied East Jerusalem, including the Ministry of Justice building and the Central Court building, during a demonstration supporting the striking prisoners on Saturday.

The daily printed a picture of a Palestinian resident of Jerusalem raising the Palestinian flag on the fence surrounding an official Israeli building, contrasting with the Israeli flags raised on the building itself.

Both al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted the Presidential Spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh stressing that Abbas is keen to immediately implement the Doha agreement between Fatah and Hamas movements to end the internal division and start the elections.
