Jerusalem Mayor Plans New Settlement near East Jerusalem, Says Israeli Media

JERUSALEM, April 3, 2012 (WAFA) – Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat revealed on Monday that he is endorsing the establishment of a new settlement near the East Jerusalem town of Abu Dis, Tuesday reported the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

It said Barkat is planning about 200 new homes for the new settlement, located between Abu Dis and Jabal Mukkaber area in East Jerusalem, on land purchased by the Jewish-American billionaire Irving Moskowitz, a known supporter of settlement activities.

The new settlement, which will be known as Kidmat Zion, will be on close proximity of the Apartheid Wall and the building designated as the future home of the Palestinian parliament, reported Haaretz.

Haaretz  reported that Meretz councilman Meir Margalit denouncing Barkat’s plan, saying “Palestinians cannot live with a plan like this, which will split East Jerusalem in two and destroy any chance of dividing the city and of reaching a peace agreement.”
