RAMALLAH, March 28, 2012 (WAFA) – The prime headline in Wednesday’s issue of al-Ayyam newspaper quoted a United Nations official saying there are slim chances for the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.
UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Robert Serry, made this statement at a briefing to the Security Council on Tuesday. He also said the Palestinian Authority is at a risk due to its acute financial crisis.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida dedicated most of its front page to feature the deteriorating health condition of striking Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, mainly Hana Shalabi, who has entered her 42nd day of hunger strike protesting her arrest without charge or trial.
The daily printed a picture of a demonstration in solidarity with Shalabi in Ramallah.
Reporting on the same item, Al-Quds said President Mahmoud Abbas instructed Minister of Civil Affairs to follow up on Shalabi’s case with the Israeli side.
On a black background, al-Quds commemorated on its front page the seventh anniversary for the death of its founder Mahmoud Abu Zuluf.
Al-Ayyam highlighted news from Syria, reporting that the Syrian regime agreed to the six-point peace plan presented by Kofi Anan, the UN-Arab League envoy on Syria, amid international calls demanding Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to resign.
The daily printed a picture of a Syrian man walking in the city of Homs, showing the amount of destruction sustained to the neighborhood following a shelling by al-Assad’s security troops on the city.
The dailies featured on their front page the upcoming Arab Summit, which is scheduled to be held in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Friday. Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the summit intends to ask the United States not to veto the Palestinian application for full UN membership.
