Israel Transfers Striking Prisoner to Hospital

RAMALLAH, March 20, 2012 (WAFA) – Striking Palestinian prisoner Hana Shalabi was transferred from the Israeli HaSharon prison to Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba, said head of the Palestinian Prisoners Club Qaddura Fares on Tuesday.
He said in a press release that Israeli forces transferred Shalabi, who has been on an open-ended hunger strike for 34 days protesting her arrest without charge or trial, to hospital on Monday after a severe deterioration in her health.
Minister of Prisoners Affairs Issa Qaraqi told Voice of Palestine radio that Shalabi was transferred to hospital after she was examined by a doctor from Physicians for Human Rights-Israel (PHR-Israel), which issued a statement on her medical condition.
PHR-Israel said Shalabi was at risk of “imminent death; suffering from muscle breakdown, very slow pulse and drop in blood sodium levels which might lead to a heart failure at any moment.”
Qaraqi held Israel responsible for the life of Shalabi and called on international human rights organizations to intervene and save her life.
