RAMALLAH, February 27, 2012 (WAFA) – Monday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused on the International Conference for the Defense of Occupied Jerusalem, which is being held in Qatar, and President Mahmoud Abbas’ opening address.
The top headlines in al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam focused on a call by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, to take the Jerusalem issue to the United Nations Security Council, which was backed by Abbas. The three dailies printed pictures of the conference.
Al-Quds also highlighted segments of Abbas’ speech in which he accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of attempting to erase the Arab, Islamic and Christian character of East Jerusalem and Netanyahu's response describing what Abbas said as “incitement and despicable.”
Al-Ayyam reported on its front page that Qatar wants UN to form a committee to investigate Israeli measures to Judaize Jerusalem since its occupation in 1967.
Al-Quds reported on Israeli measures in East Jerusalem and violent confrontations that erupted between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians in the northern Jerusalem town of al-Ram.
Al-Quds editorial tackled the Jerusalem conference and called on the Arab countries to uphold their financial obligations toward Jerusalem to face an escalation in Israeli settlement activities and efforts to Judaize the Old City.
