Newspapers Review: Al-Aqsa Events, Killing of Palestinian Dominate Dailies

RAMALLAH, February 25, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Saturday focused on Israeli police crackdown on worshippers inside the yards of Al-Aqsa Mosque in the Old City of occupied Jerusalem and the consequent army killing of a Palestinian during demonstrations near Qalandia checkpoint, south of Ramallah.

The main story dominating al-Ayyam, al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Quds said Israeli soldiers opened fire and killed Talat Ramiyeh, 25, outside al-Ram, south of Qalandia checkpoint, when residents marched to the outskirts of the town to protest Israeli police actions against Palestinians at al-Aqsa Mosque earlier in the day.

The three dailies printed pictures of the Israeli assaults against Palestinian worshippers at al-Aqsa Mosque following the Friday prayer. The pictures featured Israeli police physically assaulting and launching tear gas canisters at the worshippers.

Along with the reports on al-Aqsa Mosque clashes, the dailies also featured the Israeli assaults targeting the weekly non-violent demonstrations against settlements and the Apartheid Wall across the West Bank, resulting in dozens of injuries and arrests among the protesters.

One of al-Quds front page headlines said Israeli soldiers arrested a Palestinian girl in Hebron under the pretext of attempting to stab a soldier.

Another item featured on al-Quds was the ongoing meetings in Cairo of the Palestinian committees resulting from the reconciliation talks during which it was decided to increase the number of the Palestinian National Council (PNC) member to 350.

The editorial in al-Quds newspaper slammed Israeli police assaults against Palestinians in al-Haram al-Sharif compound in the Old City of Jerusalem, adding that Israel must put a stop to breach of the sanctity of one the holiest Islamic sites. The daily called to take the issue of Jerusalem to the international community to avoid more turbulence in the region.
