RAMALLAH, February 22, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Arabic Palestinian dailies celebrated what some described as “the victory” of prisoner Khader Adnan following a deal with the Israeli state prosecutor’s office.
According to the deal, Adnan would immediately end his 66-day long hunger strike in return for his release on April 17.
Al-Ayyam’s front page story read: “Khader Adnan Wins,” while al-Quds read: “Adnan ends hunger strike after winning battle against administrative detention.”
The three dailies printed photos of Palestinians celebrating news of Adnan’s imminent release.
Al-Ayyam reported on the clashes between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers during demonstrations in solidarity with Adnan near Ramallah.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida featured President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton in the Jordanian capital Amman.
Al-Quds focused on the meeting Jordan’s King Abdullah had with Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations in Amman, saying that unilateral Israeli measures and policies especially those which target Jerusalem are an obstacle to peace.
It reported on the planned meetings in Cairo on Wednesday for various reconciliation committees as well as a meeting between Abbas and Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal on Thursday.
Al-Quds editorial discussed Israel’s administrative detention practice, which it said violates international law. It praised Adnan’s courage and patience in his fight against the Israeli establishment.
