Newspapers Review: Death of Palestinian Dominates Dailies

RAMALLAH, December 28, 2011 (WAFA) – The death of a Palestinian in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza on the third anniversary of the Israeli Operation Cast Lead dominated Wednesday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Ayyam highlighted the death of Abdullah al-Tlbani, 22, when an Israeli reconnaissance plane fired a missile at a three-wheeler motorcycle in Dowar Abu Sharkh area in the northern Gaza Strip on Tuesday.

The headline reported that 11 Palestinians were injured in a series of airstrikes, amid Israeli threats of a large-scale military operation against Gaza.

The daily printed a picture of Palestinian policemen removing the destroyed motorcycle from the scene.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that President Mahmoud Abbas named Nidal Abu Dukhan as new head of the National Security Forces, replacing General Diab al-Ali, known as Abu al-Fatah.

The daily said Al-Ali was appointed as advisor to the president on military affairs and was awarded the Jerusalem Star medal, the highest Palestinian award, featuring a picture of the awarding ceremony.

Al-Quds chose to highlight a new settlements plan by Elad organization and the Israeli municipality of  Jerusalem, to construct new tourist projects over 8400 square meters in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan and the Old City.

The daily reported that the Planning and Building Committee of the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem is expected to approve the plan.

In a related matter, Al-Ayyam featured that the Planning and Building Committee will discuss on Wednesday a plan to construct 130 housing units in Gilo settlement south of Jerusalem.

Al-Quds editorial tackled the cheap housing units offered to Jews in West Bank settlements and the Arab housing crisis in East Jerusalem.

The newspaper detailed the difficult and immensely expensive procedures Palestinians have to go through to obtain a license to build from Israeli authorities, and Israeli harassment afterwards to demolish or take over the Palestinian-owned houses for the benefit of settlers.
