Abbas Briefs PLO Special Committee on Political Developments

RAMALLAH, December 22, 2011 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas Thursday briefed the special committee for activating Palestine Liberation Organization on various political developments.

This came in the first meeting of the PLO Committee, headed by Abbas and with the participation of the head of Egyptian intelligence, Minister Mourad Mowafi, held in Al-Andalus Palace in Cairo, to reactivate, develop and maintain structures of the PLO, called the interim leadership frame, according to the Cairo Declaration of 2005.

The meeting began with Abbas speech in which he thanked Egypt and its leadership for its efforts in supporting the Palestinian cause and supporting the success of the Palestinian reconciliation.

Abbas reviewed what has been achieved in the reconciliation file, and declared that he has issued a presidential decree to form the Central Elections Commission in accordance with what was agreed on in the comprehensive dialogue.

He also reviewed the political situation and the difficulties facing the peace process due to the Israeli refusal to commit to implementing its entitlements, particularly the complete cessation of settlement activities.

He stressed the need to resume the peace process based on stopping settlement activities, recognizing terms of reference of the peace process; accepting the two-state solution and recognizing the 1967 borders.

President Abbas also affirmed that the move towards gaining full membership of the State of Palestine in the United Nations and its institutions will remain constant, in accordance with the developments facing the Palestinian cause.

He called on the Arab nation to fulfill its obligations towards the Palestinian people, PNA and the PLO to enable them to withstand pressures, siege and threats to cut aid supporting them in order to end the occupation and establish the independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

On his part, Mowafi stressed that the Egyptian leadership and people are committed to the Palestinian cause, and that the unity of the Palestinian people falls in the top of priorities of the Egyptian national security.

The Committee discussed extensively its agenda, which emphasized the need for holding periodic meetings to accomplish its tasks in full, and complete the formation of the Palestinian National Council elections.

At the end of its meeting, the PLO Committee, formed in light of the Cairo Declaration, in 2005, called for the need to follow up the Palestinian move in the UN at various levels of the international community to urge it to implement the resolutions of the international legitimacy and the obligations it has undertaken.
