RAMALLAH, December 21, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Wednesday focused on the Palestinian factions’ meeting in Cairo, President Mahmoud Abbas’ visit to Turkey, and the situation in Syria.
Al-Quds highlighted the Palestinian factions’ decisions to form a new elections commission for the presidential, parliamentary and national council elections, headed by the current, independent commission president, Hanna Naser, as well as to postpone discussing the issue of forming the government to January 26.
The daily said that Abbas will meet Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal in Cairo on Wednesday to continue discussing ways to implement the reconciliation agreement and outstanding issues.
Al-Ayyam featured, on its front page, Abbas’ visit to Turkey, reporting on his meetings with Turkish President Abdullah Gul and the Palestinian prisoners that were released to Turkey in the recent swap deal with Israel.
The daily also said that Mayor of the Turkish city of Konya, Tahir Akyürek, gave Abbas citizenship and named a park in the city after him.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida featured one of the bloodiest days in Syria since the beginning of the nine-month uprising as its main headline read in bold: “200 killed, injured in Syria…Arab monitors arrive in Damascus on Thursday.”
Al-Quds printed a picture of Egyptian women protesting against security forces’ escalated violence targeting them. The news article below the picture reported on an apology issued by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces of Egypt for the recent “excesses.”
The daily also featured recommendations by the Supreme Council to end the violence and spare the lives of all Egyptians.
