RAMALLAH, December 20, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Tuesday focused on the situation in Syria, President Mahmoud Abbas’ visit to Turkey and the latest settlers’ attack in the West Bank.
Al-Ayyam newspaper reported that the Syrian regime signed the protocol of an Arab League plan to allow access of Arab monitors to the country on Monday, while the regime security forces reportedly killed dozens of military defectors, a number estimated in al-Ayyam as 72 and in al-Hayat al-Jadida as 80.
Al-Ayyam also featured a United Nations General Assembly resolution strongly condemning the “continued grave and systematic” human rights violations in Syria and called for an immediate end to all violence in that country.
A picture of Abbas in his meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmed Davutoglu in Konya, Turkey appeared on al-Hayat al-Jadida’s front page as the headline quoted Abbas saying, “We wish to raise the Palestinian flag in the UN like in UNESCO.”
The daily reported that Abbas will meet Turkish President Abdullah Gül on Wednesday.
Al-Ayyam highlighted in red the recent settlers’ attack on Beitin, a village northeast of Ramallah, where settlers from Beit El settlement set fire to five Palestinian-owned cars in the village; the fire burnt the cars and spread, burning nearby buildings’ fronts and windows.
The daily printed a picture of the burnt vehicles and the front of a residential building near the scene.
Al-Quds was the only newspaper to feature the European Commission’s new assistance package for the occupied Palestinian Territory for 2012, amounting to €160.4 million. Two thirds of the amount will go to the Palestinian Authority, to help it cover wages and pensions for essential civilian workers and social allowances for vulnerable Palestinian families.
The three dailies reported on the launch of an important phase of Palestinian internal talks, with an anticipated meeting between delegations of Palestinian factions and independent figures to be held Tuesday in Cairo.
