Newspapers Review: Abbas Interview with British Minister, Clashes in Egypt

RAMALLAH, December 18, 2011 (WAFA) – Sunday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused on President Mahmoud Abbas’ interview with Euronews channel in Brussels, and the renewed violent clashes in Egypt.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on its front page on Abbas’ interview on the Fatah-Hamas reconciliation process, broadcast Saturday, where he stressed that Palestinians welcome advice and are ready to correct their mistakes if found.

The daily also featured Abbas meeting with the British Minister of International Development, Andrew Mitchell, in Ramallah Saturday evening, where Abbas informed Mitchell of the latest updates in the halted Palestinian-Israeli peace process due to the Israeli government’s positions and ongoing settlements activities.

Al-Ayyam newspaper focused on the continuous violent clashes between Egyptian protesters against the military rule and the army forces that started on Friday, and featured warnings by Egyptian Prime Minister Kamal Ganzouri of an “attack against the revolution.”

A picture of an arson engulfing the building of the road committee that overlooks the Tahrir Square in Cairo appeared on al-Ayyam front page.

The highlight of al-Quds’ front page was the new Israeli approval of the building of 23 housing units for a new settlement outpost in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Ras al-Amoud. The daily printed an aerial picture of the outpost location in Jerusalem.

The three newspapers reported on the death of a Palestinian in Israeli shelling of an area east of Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip on Friday evening.
