Newspapers Review: Saif al-Islam Gaddafi Captured

RAMALLAH, November 20, 2011 (WAFA) – News on the capture of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, headed all three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Sunday.

Al-Quds reported on its front page on the details of Gaddafi’s arrest in the city of Obary in Southern Libya on Saturday. He is wanted by the International Court of Justice for committing war crimes.

The news piece said an angry crowd of Libyans attempted to break into the plane carrying Gaddafi but were stopped before reaching him.

The daily printed a picture of him in disguise on the plane that carried him to the Libyan capital Tripoli.

Al-Ayyam’s prime story quoted PLO Central Committee member, Azzam al-Ahmad, confirming a meeting between President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Khaled Mishaal on Thursday in Cairo to address the reconciliation agreement.

Al-Ahmad denied reports on an agreement between Hamas and Fatah to place the headquarters of the next Palestinian government in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida focused on Prime Minister Salam Fayyad’s statements on his Facebook page, where he stressed that he was not forced on the Palestinian people as prime minister or any other position, calling all Palestinian factions to agree on a new prime minister.

Fayyad stressed that he is more than willing to leave his current position as he refuses to be an obstacle or cause any disturbance in the Palestinian arena.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted Abbas’ meetings with a delegation from India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA), as well as the Special Envoy of the Government of Japan for the Middle East, Yutaka Limura, on Saturday in Ramallah. The daily printed a picture of Abbas’ meeting with the IBSA delegation.

The three papers featured one dead and a total of 676 injured in the recent clashes between Egyptian activists and riot police in Tahrir square in Cairo, after the police attempted to stop activists from staging a long-term encampment there. Protestors are demanding the ruling military to quickly announce a date to hand over power to an elected government immediately after the end of parliamentary elections in March.
