RAMALLAH, August 23, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Tuesday focused on the escalating situation in Libya as clashes continue between the rebels and Muammar Gaddafi's forces in the capital Tripoli.
Al-Quds newspaper's front page reported on the Libyan rebels' takeover of most of Tripoli except for Gaddafi's Bab Azizia headquarters, where battles between the rebels and Gaddafi's troops continue.
The rebels have taken over the National Television building in Tripoli as well as freed thousands of Libyan political prisoners, said the daily.
The story also revealed that Palestine and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) declared their recognition of the Libyan Transitional National Council Monday night.
Al-Ayyam daily reported on President Mahmoud Abbas' postponement of the local councils elections scheduled to be held in the West Bank on October 22 until suitable conditions exist for holding them in the Palestinian Territory.
Al-Hayat Al-Jadida covered Abbas' meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Al-Arabi and Lebanese Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour on Monday to discuss the agenda of the Arab peace initiative follow-up committee meeting, which will be held Tuesday in Doha, Qatar.
The three newspapers reported on the situation in Syria and the death of 10 Syrians at the hands of President Bashar Al-Assad’s troops.
An op-ed in al-Ayyam by Muhannad Abdul Hamid tackled the situation in Libya, addressing the fall of Gaddafi as the 'fall of the Tyrant' and the reconstruction of the country following six months of revolution.
Abdul Hamid called the Libyan transitional council to draw the lines between the new Libyan agenda and the NATO's agenda, in order to put restrictions on NATO's new relation with Libya and avoid any type of dependency relationships.
