Newspapers Review: Dailies Focus on Libyan Developments

RAMALLAH, August 22, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Arabic Palestinian dailies Monday focused on the collapse of the Libyan regime after the capital Tripoli, the last bastion of Muammar Gaddafi, fell to the rebel forces.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida's main headline read: 'Libya Free of Gaddafi,' featuring the Libyan rebels' success in taking over Tripoli, while Gaddafi's whereabouts were not known.

The story said that Tripoli, except for Gaddafi's Bab Azizia headquarters, is completely under the rebels’ control. It said several of Gaddafi's sons, including Saif al-Islam, the public face of the Libyan regime since the unrest in the country began last February, were arrested.

The three papers printed pictures of the rebel forces entering Tripoli and the celebrations that followed.

Al-Quds front page story featured Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's statements that the Western countries, mainly US, calls on him to resign are 'worthless.' Assad warned from the implications of any military action against his country.

Al-Ayyam front page story reported on Hamas announcement that the Palestinian factions in Gaza agreed to the calm in the Strip through international talks led by Egypt to stop the escalation in Gaza, while Israel did not make a statement on the matter.

Al-Quds editorial condemned the international community's silence at the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and the escalation in the West Bank, describing the hypocrisy of the Western countries, which interfere in the affairs of Arab states while look the other way when Israel kills Palestinians.
