Egypt Working to Restore Calm to Gaza, says Official

RAMALLAH, August 20, 2011 (WAFA) - Egypt is doing all it can with all parties to restore calm to the Gaza Strip, Saturday said Egypt’s ambassador to the Palestinian Territory, Yasser Othman.

Othman, who had earlier met with President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss the latest developments and Israeli attacks against the Gaza Strip, said that his country wants to see stability return to the area out of concern for the safety and interest of the Palestinian people.

He said Egypt believes that Israel must stop its assault on Gaza in order for the Palestinian factions to agree to the calm.

Abbas briefed Othman in their meeting at the Muqata on the latest developments regarding seeking United Nations recognition in September of a Palestinian state and discussed the dangerous consequences for the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip.
