Newspapers Review: Abbas in Lebanon Main Topic in Dailies

RAMALLAH, August 17, 2011 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas’ visit to Lebanon and his meeting with President Michel Suleiman was the highlight of Wednesday’s three Palestinian Arabic dailies. The papers also posted pictures of the two leaders.

The headlines on this visit, however, varied. While Al-Quds and Al-Hayat Al-Jadida highlighted Abbas’ statement against settling Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, Al-Ayyam said Abbas and Suleiman discussed the Palestinian September plan to get recognition at the United Nations. Lebanon is going to be president of the Security Council in September when the Palestinian Authority plans to submit its application for recognition.

The papers also reported on the two Palestinians that Israel shot dead in Gaza - one killed in an early morning air strike and the second later in the day when soldiers manning a border observation post shot him dead, allegedly for being near the border fence.

The death of a Palestinian in East Jerusalem when an Israeli border guard vehicle ran him over late Tuesday, near the settlement of Har Homa, south of Jerusalem, was also reported in the papers.

The quartet statement on Israeli settlements, the arrival of Hamas leader Khaled Mishal in Cairo for possible talks regarding a prisoners exchange between Hamas and Israel, as well as developments in the Arab world were also highlighted on the front pages of the dailies.

The editorial in Al-Quds expressed concern at the fate of the Palestinian refugees in the Arab world, particularly in Syria where the army opened fire at Ramil refugee camp in Latakia, killing, injuring and dispersing camp residents.

The opinion pieces in Al-Ayyam discussed various topics, including the September plan.
