Arab League Secretary General Condemns Israeli Decision to Expand Settlements in Jerusalem

CAIRO, August 8, 2011 (WAFA) - Arab League Secretary-General, Nabil Al-Araby, strongly condemned on Monday the Israeli authorities’ decision to build 900 new settlement units in Jabal Abu Ghoneim, in East Jerusalem, according to a press statement by Al-Araby.
He stressed that settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) contradict with Israel’s obligations under international law, with the 1949 Geneva Conventions and with the Security Council’s decisions.

He added that the Israeli government’s determination to continue with the settlement expansion policy, through the annexation of land and the dismemberment of the OPT, undermines all efforts to achieve a lasting just peace in the region, as well as kills any chance of reaching two-state solution based on the 1967 borders as agreed upon internationally.

Al-Araby called on the international community and the United Nations (UN) Security Council to immediately intervene to stop the Israeli settlement activities and to take a firm stance against them, as they are illegal under international law and the UN Security Council’s decisions.

He also called on to lift the immunity of these ongoing Israeli measures and violations against the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights.
