Newspaper Review: Mass Popular Movement Supporting Palestine in September

RAMALLAH, August 3, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Arabic dailies focused Wednesday on an anticipated mass popular movement supporting the plan to seek United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state next September.

Al-Ayyam's main front page story said the PLO is organizing the million-person rally “Palestine 194,” on September 20 to support the Palestinian bid, in reference to Palestine becoming the 194th UN member state if it is recognized.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida's prime story reported on the Arab Peace Committee follow-up meeting in Qatar to discuss possible measures to support the Palestinian plan to seek UN recognition next September.

The news piece also featured Israeli preparations for anticipated clashes between Palestinians and the Israeli army and quoted Shaul Mofaz, chairman of the Knesset foreign affairs and defense committee, saying that Israel may call up reservists next September.

The three papers reported on a meeting between Fatah and Hamas next Sunday in Cairo to discuss ways to implement the reconciliation agreement. A Hamas official said the meeting will not tackle the government issue.

Al-Quds front page highlighted the Palestinian cabinet meeting on Tuesday, in which Prime Minister Salam Fayyad expressed hope that Arab states will fulfill their financial commitment to the Palestinian Authority to help it overcome the current financial crisis.
