Newspapers Review: Dailies Focus on Abbas Visit to Turkey, Israeli Attacks

RAMALLAH, July 23, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Saturday highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas visit to Turkey and the Israeli attacks against Palestinian non-violent protests in the West Bank.

Al-Ayyam's prime headline reported on Abbas' announcement of a state of diplomatic readiness to gain support of the Palestinian plan to seek United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state within 1967 borders in September.

The paper quoted Abbas, during his visit to Istanbul, as saying that the Palestinian financial crisis is real and that the Palestinian Authority was not using it to achieve a political agenda. He also reiterated his stance to name Salam Fayyad for prime minister in the transitional government.

Al-Quds main front page story reported on the Israeli army attacks on non-violent protests against the settlements and the apartheid wall across the West Bank, resulting in dozens of suffocation cases among protesters and the burning down of fields of olive trees.

The newspaper also reported that Israeli soldiers arrested four Palestinians and detained 50 international activists in a camp near Nabi Saleh, a village north of Ramallah.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida featured the uncovering of an Israeli document that exposed plans for the takeover of Palestinian land in the West Bank to prevent territorial contiguity of a future Palestinian state.

The three newspapers reported on the death of Norwegians in a massive explosion at a government building in Oslo and the shooting at a summer camp for youth members of the ruling party in Utoeya, in Norway.
