Newspapers Review: Obama’s Anticipated Speech Hits Front Page Headlines

RAMALLAH, May 19, 2011 (WAFA) – US President Barack Obama’s speech planned for Thursday was highlighted in two of the three Arabic dailies published Thursday.

Al-Quds main headline said “Chances of peace in the Middle East null, no new initiatives.” Al-Hayat Al-Jadida said “Obama tries today to outline a clear policy toward Arab Spring and the peace process.”

Al-Ayyam’s main front page headline had to do with the US as well, but focused on Washington’s sanctions against the Syrian regime.

The papers featured many other stories on the front page, particularly the meeting on Wednesday in Ramallah between President Abbas and a ranking US delegation. They also talked about the situation in various Arab countries.

The editorial in Al-Quds said that the US and Europe will be required to adopt a position on the Middle East conflict that will lead to the end of the Israeli occupation because without that this conflict will never be resolved.

The editorials in Al-Ayyam covered different subjects, including one on anticipated US policy toward the Palestinian question, which did not seem optimistic that Obama will have anything new to say in his speech.
