World Bank Report is Positive Improvement, Says Minister of Planning

RAMALLAH, May 18, 2011 (WAFA) - Palestinian Minister of Planning, Ali al-Jarbawi, said on Wednesday that the Palestinian Authority (PA) considers the World Bank report regarding “strengthening the economic governance and fighting corruption” as a positive development.
“Major reforms have been carried out, particularly in public finance, and the PA is now able to better manage its public financial systems and equity holdings,” said Mariam Sherman, World Bank Country Director. However, there are still important reforms that remain incomplete and other areas where work has not yet begun.”

Al-Jarbawi said that the Palestinian political system is not perfect, calling on the World Bank to point out in this report the Israeli practices’ impact hindering PA’s efforts in fighting corruption.

He called on all the donors to commit to the same transparency that the PA is committed to, explaining that donors support building Palestinian systems, however they destroy them due to political considerations.
