Newspaper Reviews: Hamas and Fatah Making Progress with Reconcilitation

RAMALLAH, May 18, 2011 (WAFA)- The three Palestinian dailies focused on Hamas and Fatah’s agreement to postpone the elections and exchange names of candidates, and Obama's concurrence of the 1967 borders.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Al-Ayyam and Al-Quds highlighted the agreement between Fatah and Hamas to exchange the names of candidates for the elections and form a unity government.

Al-Ayyam quoted President Mahmoud Abbas saying: “The Palestinian people cannot wait forever, and the reconciliation agreement increases the chance for peace.”

The three papers also featured a report, published by an Israeli observer, accusing the Islamic Awqaf institutions of having conducted excavations in al-Aqsa mosque without legal permission.

The dailies highlighted Obama’s upcoming speech and his announcement that he concurs with the 1967 borders for the Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as the capital for both states.

The postponing of elections until late October was also featured on the front pages of the dailies, with the reassurance that this move comes to ensure the West Bank and Gaza Strip have the elections together.
