Newspaper Review: Fate of Al-Bostan, Cancelation of 140,000 Citizenships

RAMALLAH, May 12, 2011 (WAFA) - The three daily Palestinian papers focused on two main topics Thursday: the cancelation of 140,000 Palestinian citizenship statuses and the frozen demolition orders in al-Bostan neighborhood in the town of Silwan.

Al-Quds, Al-Ayyam and Al-Hayat Al-Jadida featured the story of confidential Israeli documents about the cancelation of citizenship statuses, over a period of 27 years, of 140,000 Palestinians who were out of the country for over three and a half years between 1967 - 1994.

In Al-Quds, Fayyad dubs the upcoming Palestinian government the most important one in the history of Palestine. Al-Ayyam quoted Fayyad in its headline saying: “We will not kneel and will not go hungry … We will not surrender under any circumstances.”  Al-Hayat Al-Jadida quotes Fayyad’s plea to the Arab countries for financial aid as “we are in utmost need.”

The dailies also featured an atricle, on each of their first pages,  quoting former Shabak director, Yuval Diskin. Al-Hayat Al-Jadida and Al-Ayyam said: “Diskin worried about the unilateral announcement of the Palestinian state in September, and Barak calls for the formation of a political plan to face September’s ‘Tsunami’”.

The demolition of al-Bostan neighborhood in the town of Silwan in Jerusalem was also on the first pages of the dailies. Al-Quds said the Israeli High Court has postponed the verdict on demolishing the houses until May 24, 2011.

The dailies quoted the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee on the reconciliation and on Iranian interference in the affairs of the Gulf countries.

According to Al-Quds, the committee said it is: “100% behind the reconciliation” and denounced Israel’s withholding of the PA’s tax revenues in an effort to ruin the reconciliation efforts. The committee also demanded international pressure on Israel to release the revenues, and renounced the Iranian interference in Gulf countries’ affairs.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida quoted the committee in its headline with: “We will go to the UN Security Council if Israel continues to withhold the PA’s tax revenues” and that it will also continue to support the reconciliation.

Events in Syria featured in Al-Ayyam’s top story: “19 killed in Daraa and Homs; military operation and arrests continue in several cities.”
