Newspapers Review: Dailies Discussed Reconciliation and Salaries

RAMALLAH, May 11, 2011 (WAFA) - The Palestinian dailies focused on President Abbas’ comments in the Fatah Revolutionary Council’s meeting in Ramallah.

Headlines in Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Al-Ayyam and Al-Quds quoted Abbas on the reconciliation agreement and the plan to seek United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state if negotiations fail.

The three papers also featured Fayyad’s calling on the international community to pressure Israel to release the monthly revenues to the Palestinian Authority.

Fayyad also made a call to give the Palestinian reconciliation a chance during PADICO’s announcement of issuance of the first corporate bonds in Palestine.

Pictures of Palestinian commemorations marking al-Nakbah appeared on the front pages of all the dailies.

Al-Ayyam’s front page included an exclusive interview with Azzam Al-Ahmad, in which he uncovered details of the reconciliation meeting in Cairo and confirmed talks on a prisoner swap for the captured Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, under Egyptian supervision.

The top story in Al-Quds addressed the Israeli government’s new policy of attempting to legitimize settlements and illegal buildings.

The papers’ front pages also covered latest events in Arab countries such as Syria, Libya and Egypt.

Al-Ayyam’s opinion pieces focused on the salaries crisis, the reconciliation and its aftermath.

An Al-Quds editorial addressed al-Nakbah and the right to return.
