JERUSALEM, May 9, 2011 (WAFA) – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) spokesman, Christopher Gunness, announced that UNRWA will suspend or limit its services in a number of areas across Syria, due to the political turbulences and revolutions across the country.
The UNRWA serves 30,000 Palestinian refugees in Dera’a, a refugee camp south of Syria, through eleven schools, several clinics and community centers.
Gunness said the agency has little information regarding its staff or the refugees’ conditions in the camp, as the regular communication systems have been inoperable for the past two weeks. He expressed particular concern for more than 120 patients who rely on UNRWA for providing insulin, without which their life would be at risk.
The agency has tried to send emergency medical supplies to Dera’a but failed.
UNRWA works to give aid and protection to about 4.7 million registered Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and the Palestinian Territory, until a solution is found to the refugee issue.
